Escaping the Violence of Bad Atonement Theory
July 12, 20193:00 pm–3:50 pm
FIRST a lively conversation about the violence and destruction which is generated by bad atonement theory (after all, if your understanding of God requires a violent or wrathful or warrior God to work the dark magic of salvation, then it’s okay for you to be a violent, wrathful, warmonger in God’s name!) THEN, reflection on potential ways forward. We combine a brief presentation and a bit of role play with conversation – and maybe even non-violent, peaceful debate! This is not an “expert lecture” but a passionate offering to share and collaborate with others who are engaged in escaping the theology of a wrathful, angry, vengeful God which dominates so much of American Christianity today. A bibliography will be provided participants.
